Heritage, House & Garden
Butler House stands quietly at the edge of Kilkenny’s medieval heart, a house full of stories, surrounded by gardens, stone walls, and the legacy of those who lived here before.
Built in the late 18th century as the dower house to Kilkenny Castle, it was home to generations of the Butler family, whose presence shaped the city for centuries. Today, it remains part of the original Kilkenny Castle Demesne, a rare and beautiful piece of Ireland’s living heritage.
Under the care of the Kilkenny Civic Trust, Butler House and its Garden have been carefully restored to allow their story to continue. As you wander the grounds, explore the Castle Yard, or take in the view from your window, you are part of that story too.
Explore the threads of history that run through the House, the Garden, the Castle, and the people who have preserved it all for the generations to come.
