Kilkenny Cycling Trails

 

Kilkenny is home to some of the most picturesque and idyllic landscapes Ireland has to offer. There are many cycling trails available in close proximity to Butler House. Cycling trails are the perfect opportunity to socialise with friends and family, and explore Kilkenny's landscape while getting in some exercise! The Kilkenny Cycle Trails are located on the doorstep of Butler House, so there has never been a better time to get on your bike... 

1. East Kilkenny Cycling Route: 

This cycling trail covers a distance of 64km and takes approximately 3 to 4.5 hours. It is spread across country roads and laneways and it is usually quiet on this road. However, it is important to note that there is a one-way system in Thomastown. Along this route, you will be immersed in the stunning views of the River Barrow & River Nore providing a beautiful background for photography.

The East Kilkenny Cycling Route caters to experienced cyclists who are moderately fit, and if you want to park your bike and embark on a walk, there are scenic walks to enjoy along the way such as O'Gorman's Lane Loop and Brandon Hill Loop. 

There are many cafés along the way to enjoy tea or coffee and maybe even a scone or cake, and relax.

 2. North Kilkenny Cycle Loop:

This trail is a shorter route which would suit leisure cyclists who only want to cycle short distances. The North Kilkenny Cycle Loop covers a distance of 27km and takes between 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete. Along this route, you will travel through rural laneways and riverside roads to explore Kilkenny sights. 

There are many facilities available along the route such as Keogh's Model Bakery, Café L'Arche and Kilkenny Free Range Poultry.

3. North Kilkenny Cycle Route:

The North Kilkenny Cycle Route is catered to more advanced cyclists who enjoy covering long distances as this route covers a distance of 82km and usually takes between 4.5 to 6 hours to complete.

This route is the most challenging cycling route so it is advised that experienced cyclists embark on this route.

Along this route, you will explore the quiet country roads while being immersed in the breathtaking scenery of villages such as Freshford and Castlecomer. 

4. South Kilkenny Cycle Loop:

The South Kilkenny Cycle Loop covers a distance of 41km and lasts approximately 2 to 3 hours. You will explore the sights of South Kilkenny, and visit the town of Bennetsbridge. During this cycle, you will enter a town so it's important to exercise caution on approach. 

It is advised that you pack well for your cycling trail and wear the appropriate clothing depending on weather conditions. Packing equipment which is suitable for the journey is also important!
