A Great Irish Love Story: The Ladies of Llangollen

- Posted on: 22/10/2025 - $itemValue.title

In an age of rigid convention and social expectation, two remarkable women from Kilkenny made a choice that defied all norms, to live a life of their own making, together.

Lady Eleanor Butler of Kilkenny Castle and Sarah Ponsonby of Woodstock, County Kilkenny, became known as The Ladies of Llangollen, a name that continues to resonate across centuries. Their story is one of courage, intellect, and enduring devotion, and it all began here in Kilkenny.

A Bold Departure

Born in 1739, Lady Eleanor Butler was the youngest daughter of Walter Butler, the 16th de jure Earl of Ormonde and Lady Eleanor Butler. Raised at Kilkenny Castle, she was known for her sharp intellect, satirical wit, and deep love of books, a combination that made her both admired and unconventional. By the age of 39, she was considered a spinster by the standards of her time.

Sarah Ponsonby, born in 1755, belonged to the influential Ponsonby family of Woodstock. The two women met in 1768 and quickly formed an extraordinary bond. Faced with mounting pressure, Eleanor was to enter a convent, and Sarah to marry, they chose instead to forge their own path. In 1778, they fled Ireland together in search of a life that would grant them both freedom and dignity.

Life at Plas Newydd

They moved to Plas Newydd in Llangollen, Wales. Their new home became a sanctuary not just for themselves but for many artists, writers, and thinkers of the age. The cottage, decorated with Gothic details and surrounded by beautiful gardens, reflected their shared aesthetic and spirit. They spent five decades together, immersed in literature, gardening, and philanthropy, welcoming admirers like William Wordsworth, Lord Byron, and the Duke of Wellington.

Their devotion remained unwavering until the end. Eleanor died in 1829, and Sarah followed in 1831. They were laid to rest side by side at St. Collen’s Church, Llangollen, their story long outliving them interpreted by some as a romantic friendship, by others as a pioneering same-sex relationship. Regardless of interpretation, their unwavering commitment remains an enduring symbol of love and defiance.
